Self employed? Tips on setting up and reaching for the cloud

It’s extraordinary to consider that possibly up to 90% of small or larger businesses that have accounting software to track their cash and job flow, don’t know how to use their software package to its fullest extent.  “QuickBooks online” is a software application used by thousands of self-employed Accountants and small businesses worldwide and because it’s available via cloud, it can be updated from anywhere, at any time.

Intuit (the makers of QuickBooks) are the global leader in small business accounting software, with more than 4.5 million customers.  Many of these are self-employed.  It’s imperative for the self-employed to access the software easily.  Some lesser well known products can occasionally be aimed at computer nerds.  They will tell you how to get your software launched, but not how to use the interface.

To be self-employed you have to have a laptop.  A desktop computer can be a great base to have in your office; however, a laptop will offer more flexibility.  A reliable printer, scanner and fax machine are also essential tools for the self-employed.  The ability to “Skype” via a decent web cam can also prove invaluable for those “face to face” meetings online.

The use of Cloud computing can also be invaluable for the self-employed.  A relatively new method of delivering software options, the use of say QuickBooks Online Essentials or Online Simple Start can be a great help when sorting your books before seeing your Accountant face to face.

If your office has had the double glazing fitted for many years then you may have noticed that the odd pane or two is looking a bit steamy at times – this means the seal is broken and the pane needs replacing. However, many offices that had double glazing fitted in the eighties and early nineties will be much less energy efficient than modern units. A double glazed unit consists of two panes of gas separated by an air gap (now usually filled with a gas like argon).

This gap between the panes provides the layer of insulation that reduces heat loss and condensation. Double glazed units are generally available with gaps from 6mm to 20mm but early installations of double glazing had the 6mm narrow air gap and the closeness of the panes mean that heat can pass from the inner to outer pane. Nowadays the optimum gap is probably 16mm and the units should also be fitted with Low E Glass (Low Emissivity Glass). This type of glass has a very thin layer of a metallic coating on one side – the coating allows the heat from the sun to enter the building but reduces the heat loss from the inside by reflecting the heat back into the room.

Upgrading old double glazing is a real energy saving investment as well as a chance to upgrade the way the office looks as there are now many frame finishes and style of windows. Choosing business specialist suppliers for contractors
